Mental Health Support and Resources

Mental health significantly impacts every aspect of our lives, including our physical health, work performance, and relationships. For those in the building and construction industries, factors like long hours, physical strain, and financial pressure can be particularly challenging.

There is support available to help you look after your mental health and wellbeing. Below is a list of resources for consumers, employers and employees to assist you.

General resources

These services provide support for everyone in the community, regardless of their background or situation.

  • Lifeline Tasmania (13 11 14): 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services.
  • A Tasmania Lifeline (1800 98 44 34): A free psychosocial phone service specifically for all Tasmanians available from 8am to 8pm every day of the year. They also do call backs.
  • Beyond Blue (1300 224 636): 24/7 support for anxiety, depression, and overall mental wellbeing.
  • Medicare Mental Health: A free service connecting you to mental health support services.
  • Access Mental Health (1800 332 388): A 24/7 Tasmanian phone service for advice, assessment, and referrals to public mental health services.
  • Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 467): 24/7 phone and online counselling for those at risk or bereaved by suicide.
  • Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800): Free, private, and confidential 24/7 phone and online counselling for young people aged 5 to 25.
  • Healthdirect (1800 022 222): Provides quality, approved health information and advice, including state-specific services.

Employee Resources

Tailored support for those working ‘on the tools’ and apprentices making the transition into the workforce.

  • Trade Talk (1300 003 313): A free service to anyone in the Construction and Allied Trade Industry. Call between 9am to 5pm to book an appointment with a Lifeline Counsellor.
  • Lifeline Tasmania: Offers a free, confidential counselling service specifically for apprentices and trainees in Tasmania.
  • Strong Foundations (a wellbeing guide for tradies): A practical guide by Lifeline designed to help tradies manage stress and physical strain.
  • TIACS: Free and confidential counselling by phone or text (0477 13 11 14) for blue-collar workers like tradies and truckies.
  • Work Skills For Life (WSFL): A Lifeline Tasmania program providing practical support for young apprentices and trainees as they enter the workforce.
  • Fair Work Ombudsman: The Fair Work Ombudsman offers options for people experiencing stress, conflict, or challenges at work as well as providing information, education and advice on pay rates and workplace rights and obligations.

Employer resources

Managing psychological safety in the workplace is a legal duty and helps prevent injuries and lost productivity.
