Nominating a manager for a licence

When applying for an electrical, plumbing or gas-fitting contractor’s licence the applicant must appoint a nominated manager to oversee the work. This person will be named on the licence as the nominated manager.

Eligibility to be a nominated manager

The nominated manager must hold a practitioner’s licence for the same class of work the contractor’s licence relates to.

Nominated managers for electrical contractors licences also need to complete a training course for nominated managers.

The Administrator of Occupational Licensing also needs to deem the nominated manager suitable and competent to oversee the work performed under the contractor’s licence.

Responsibilities of nominated managers

The nominated manager takes responsibility for the work performed within the contractor’s business to ensure it is safe and compliant. They are responsible for ensuring all relevant regulatory requirements are complied with.

For plumbing work and where the nominated manager is not the certifier responsible for the work, he or she must ensure that to whatever degree necessary, there are certifiers on the project who can provide the required level of supervision and sign the Standard of Work certificate at the completion of notifiable or permit plumbing work.

A nominated manager cannot sign a Standard of Work certificate for work they did not supervise or perform. Therefore, the nominated manager needs to be competent to meet these requirements, understand that they may be held personally responsible for non-compliance and be willing to take on this responsibility.

My nominated manager has resigned

If a nominated manager resigns from a business, or no longer wishes to hold this role, they can remove themselves as nominated manager using their My Licence account: About My Licence. They can do this by going to the Associated Licences tab and editing the details. The contractor’s licence holder can also remove the nominated manager from their My Licence account.

After a nominated manager leaves a business, a contractor has 60 days to find a new nominated manager. They will need to update the nominated manager details on their My Licence account.

Can a nominated manager work for more than one business?

A person can be the nominated manager for more than one different business at the same time if they choose to. However, they need to ensure that they can adequately supervise the work in all of the businesses. They would need to be named as nominated manager on each relevant contractor’s licence.

I have a large business. Can I have more than one nominated manager?

If your business has contractors licences for multiple trades they can have a different nominated manager for each trade if they choose to. For example, a business contracting for electrical and plumbing work could have different nominated managers for each trade.
